THREE THINGS 05: Sinking Ship Records

by AlexGordon.

Today’s Three Things are all bands, all bands of a similar size and they're all on the same label (so, in a way, it’s kinda just one thing).

The label is Sinking Ship Records and said three bands make up the entirety of their roster (for now). It’s a great young label unafraid to keep things simple and we like that.

Here they are, Three Things from our friend Anthony Galasso.

1. A Great Big Pile of Leaves

A Great Big Pile of Leaves is an indie/rock band featuring ex-Taking Back Sunday member, Matt Fazzi.

Sinking Ship and AGBPOL randomly met at a friend's cabin in Vermont where AGBPOL was recording parts for their latest album.

"We knew we wanted to form a label -- and we thought they'd be a great first project," said Sinking Ship co-owner Steve Kelly.

The label agreed to press the vinyl for Have You Seen My Prefrontal Cortex? and the rest is history.

[Shameless plug: we shot AGBPOL for Live At The Show. It's really good. Watch.]

2. Pinsky

Portland, Maine | Punk/Indie/Rock

Priding themselves as one of New England's best kept secrets, Pinsky is a punk-infused indie/rock band with a knack for the nostalgic without going overboard on the sentimental.

As the story goes, Sinking Ship ended up driving through a blizzard to Portland, Maine to spend a weekend of drinks and good times with the band.

"By the end of the weekend, we felt like we were leaving some of our best friends," said Kelly. "They're just a naturally warm group of guys -- and you can hear that in their music. They're so appreciative of their friends. Just great, great people. Losing Touch, the first album we released for them, is always going to be one of my favorite records of all time."

Sadly Pinsky recently called it quits, but went out with a bang in releasing their final EP, Weekends, last month on {obvious answer} Sinking Ship. Hopefully another quality act fills those shoes before long.

3. Boardroom Heroes

Two brothers, Andre and Augusto Pagliarini, started a punk/rock band and called it Boardroom Heroes.

Sinking Ship discovered the band on YouTube and within a week set up a conference call to discuss a deal.

"There are a lot of bands that play this New Found Glory-inspired punk rock that has breakdowns and quasi-hardcore elements," said Kelly. "These guys do NONE of that, and I love them for it. It's just blisteringly fast punk rock - akin to NOFX or Millencolin."

Sinking Ship released their album, Another Year, in June. It's a 35-minute burst of high energy modern punk glory and you can pick it up right here.
